Marigaux

The Marigaux company was founded in 1935 by three partners, Swiss businessman Strasser, Marigaux (an instrument maker who had trained at Buffet-Crampon) and Lemaire (hence the name S.M.L. Marigaux). Following the death of Lemaire, Strasser and Marigaux bought out his shares and the company became known as ‘Strasser Marigaux'. It began its operations in Paris at 144 Boulevard de la Villette with the manufacture of saxophones and flutes. At the same time, the Malerne workshop at La Couture Boussey, a town in the Eure region (a famous centre of French craftsmanship) began to make oboes and clarinets. In 1975, Strasser Marigaux bought Malerne and transferred its operations to their more spacious factory. In 1981, the company abandoned the manufacture of other instruments in order to concentrate solely on the development of its oboes and clarinets. In the following ten years, the production of oboes increased from around 550 to over 1000 a year.

Much has changed since the early days of the company. Today, S.M.L. Marigaux is part of one of the largest instrument manufacturing groups in the world, JA Musik GmbH.

Marigaux oboes are a popular choice for oboists, and are exported to over 60 countries. Once finished, the oboe is tuned by a team including Michel Croquenoy (principal oboe of the Orchestre National de France) and international soloist François Leleux.
