Albrecht Mayer is accompanied by a Baroque chamber ensemble featuring some of the finest period players of today. A

t least since the age of Goethe, German artists have been flocking to Italy as their Promised Land of Mediterranean sunshine and adventure. For the oboe virtuoso Albrecht Mayer, the lure is more specific. “Baroque Venice,” he says, “is where the oboe came into its own.” La Serenissima — Venice herself, floating like a mirage on her Adriatic lagoon" — has held him spellbound since he first visited the city at the age of ten. He returns at least once a year. “I think,” Mayer says of the present anthology, “that this project has been growing in my heart for many years. Venice is such a fantastic island in every sense. Every time I visit, I feel like I’m stepping backwards in time — especially at night. By 10.30pm, all the tourists are gone. There are no cars. You stroll through the streets and feel completely alone.” There is always more to explore.

“…Mayer's… sweet, rounded tone, wide range of dynamics and impeccable articulation are a constant delight…” BBC Music Magazine, January 2009 ****

“A modern player goes Baroque to offer up a dish of Venetian delights. …the programme is… a well chosen comparison of Vivaldi with some of his finest Venetian contemporaries. …Mayer plays the music tremendously well.”Gramophone Magazine, November 2008

“Mayer plays modern instruments, and the works are given at modern concert pitch, so even though the accompanying strings and continuo play with just one instrument to a part, the performances have a richness that is distinctly different from today's usual period-instrument accounts. Mayer is a superb musician, with a wonderful sense of line and articulation, and gives all this music a grace and poise. There are no masterpieces here, but the disc is a more than pleasant, undemanding listen.” The Guardian, 15th August 2008 ****

“This Venetian album features concertos by Vivaldi, Albinoni, Giovanni Platti, Antonio Lotti and the Marcello brothers Alessandro and Benedetto, to which Mayer responds with virtuoso artistry and a singer's sensitive flexibility of nuance.” The Telegraph, 9th August 2008
